Second Level Academic Diploma (Two year course) - Entrance exam procedure

The entrance exam is made up of an aptitude interview aimed at understanding the motivations and verifying the aptitudes to undertake the chosen course of study, as required by the school for which registration is requested.

The candidate can present a portfolio including: panels (paintings, drawings, sculptures,  design projects or other) IT assignments- photographs- research papers/theses on subjects related to visual arts or artistic design- works submitted to competitions- other documentation according to the chosen school.

In the event of a negative outcome, admission may be considered with additional specific training commitments to be fulfilled within the first year of the course.

The interview is the only form of admission test to two year courses with the following exceptions:

For the Two year course of SCULPTURE:

The exam will take place through an online interview, aimed at verifying the degree of preparation and aptitudes of the candidate. The candidate must also submit a portfolio of up to 30 folders in PDF format (sharing the screen).

For the Two year course of SET DESIGN:

The educational offer of the Brera Set Design School includes the following four courses for the Second Level of the Set Design School:

- Set Design - Specialization Theatre

- Set Design - Specialization Cinema and TV

- Set Design - Specialization Costumes for show business and performance

- Set Design - Specialization Puppet Theatre 

Admission consists of a general and motivational interview, functional to the evaluation of the candidate's aptitude and skills.
During the interview, the candidate will be invited to:

  • Presenting his project which, due to its completeness and representativeness, is chosen from among the best in its portfolio. The presentation can be in ppt or pdf.
  • Interpreting the concept, arguing the features and composition of an image of your choice for admission and referring to the area of interest (opera house, an installation, a theater or dance show, a film, a television program , a cinema frame, a performance, etc.).
  • A week before the interviews, the admitted candidates will receive an invitation to upload the personal curriculum and the essential portfolio with the work from the previous training course and possible professional activity within a specific drive of the Brera platform. The project that the candidate will present during the interview will be contained in the portfolio.

In particular, for admission to the Cinema and TV Specialization and for the Theater Specialization it will be essential that the skills in the use of design, representation and digital processing software are evident through the work.

Good skills in drawing must be evident for admission to the Puppet Theater and Costume Show Specialization. The ability to present and support a project idea will count for all addresses.
In the case of foreign students, good knowledge of the Italian language is a prerequisite for admission.

For admission to each two year course interviews will be held by 2 teachers. Candidates will be summoned to 4 at a time every hour starting from 9.00 on the first day.

The results will be published at the end of the session on your online profile.

The candidate who does not meet the minimum requirements highlighted by the commission itself will not pass the test.

For the Two year course of PHOTOGRAPHY:
  • Present a portfolio containing a short biographical profile and no more than two personal projects each consisting of a minimum of 7 to a maximum of 14 photographs linked together by a logical thread.
  • The project must be loaded onto a drive, the details of which will be communicated later.
  • We recommend having studied the following texts before the entrance exam (translated into all languages):

For the Two year course of CINEMA AND VIDEO:
  • Present a portfolio containing a short biographical profile and no more than two personal projects relating to the chosen address.
  • The project must be loaded onto a drive, the details of which will be communicated later.
  • It is recommended to have studied the following texts before the entrance exam:

For the Two year course of NET ART:
  • Present a portfolio containing a short biographical profile and no more than two personal projects relating to the chosen address.
  • The project will be loaded onto a drive, the details of which will be communicated later.
  • We recommend having studied the following texts before the entrance exam:

 - Domenico Quaranta, Media, New Media, Postmedia, Postmedia Books, Milano 2018.
 - James Bridle, Nuova Era Oscura, Not, Rima 2019.
 - Lev Manovich, Il linguaggio dei Nuovi Media, Edizioni Olivares, Milano 2002.

  • Candidates will be contacted through a link in Google Meet in groups of 5 starting from 9.00.
  • The results will be published at the end of the session on your online profile.
  • The candidate who does not meet the minimum requirements highlighted by the commission will not pass the test
