Five year Restoration course

PFP5 Course: Book and archive materials. Products in paper/parchment. Photographic, cinematographic and digital materials

The Five year programme in restoration leads to the student obtaining a second level academic diploma qualifying for the profession of cultural heritage conservator/restorer.

The course is currently represented by the educational profile PFP5- Book and archive materials- products in paper/parchment- photographic, cinematographic and digital material.

The study plan includes a number of common historical-artistic as well as technical- scientific courses, together with specific laboratory and workshop courses relating to the three professional profiles. This ensures the student a thorough preparation in order to achieve the skills necessary to take the final qualifying exam.

Every year the School takes in 10 students for each academic specialization after passing the admission tests. The test include a graphic design test, common to all profiles, a profile-specific aptitude test and a general knowledge test. For specific information on admissions please contact the Student Administration Office.

The multiple choice theoretical test includes a common section of general culture concerning art history, natural sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, earth sciences) and English language, and a specific section for each profile chosen. To pass this test, we recommend consulting the suggested bibliography (Annex 1).

The drawing test, as with all profiles, consists in the graphic transposition of an artistic artefact, or part of it, conducted by means of a photographic reproduction. The drawing must be done with a black graphite pencil, in linear stroke and without chiaroscuro, in a reproduction in scale (to be established) with respect to the format of the photograph (Annex 2).

The aptitude test of integration of gaps, specific for PFP5, consists in the integration with watercolor or in colored pencils of the circumscribed gaps present on the facsimiles of graphic works, in different techniques, which they offered to each candidate.

The test is multiple choice, divided into two sections:

1. SECTION COMMON TO ALL THREE EDUCATIONAL PROFILES = 40 QUESTIONS

  • General Art History: 20 questions
  • Nature sciences (chemistry, biology, physics): 10 questions
  • Questions in English: 10 questions

2. SPECIFIC SECTION FOR EACH TRAINING PROFILE CHOSEN = 20 QUESTIONS

  • 20 specific questions relating to the PFP1 sector
  • 20 specific questions relating to the PFP2 sector
  • 20 specific questions relating to the PFP5 sector

Three year course

First Level Set Design course

The Set Design School endorses a training path which consolidates its solid, historical track record and at the same time now aims to integrate artistic research and production. The First level Course includes a study plan focused on historical-cultural and technical-artistic subjects designed to endorse the value of the project and artistic experimentation, the in-depth study of technological and descriptive tools, both contemporary and traditional, concerning the use and space management and the principles of  image representation. The Accademia will organize, in agreement with public and private organizations, the most appropriate internships and placements in order to forge specific professional skills and will go on to delineate specific training models for each course of study.

To be admitted to the First level Academic Diploma Course you must have a high school diploma or any other suitable qualification obtained abroad. The selection is made on the basis of an entrance exam made up of a general knowledge test, a graphic art test and an interview with the members of the Commission.

Future employment prospects

Graduates will acquire the necessary professional skills to work in the different areas of theatrical, cinema and television set design, installations and costumes for the world of show business.

Three year course

First Level Decoration course

The Course aims to foster the mastery of artistic methods and techniques, as well as gaining specific know-know and design and style methodologies in the use of the tools and artistic practices, considering traditional tools and new technologies. From a secondary discipline of architecture to the nineteenth century, the concept of “decoration” was revolutionized in the avant-garde movement, from Matisse to Klee, then with Bauhaus, endorsing experimentation with visual patterns and innovative materials, in order to create visual works and to plan and design  local environmental works and interventions.

To be admitted to the First level Academic Diploma Course you must have a high school diploma or other similar qualification obtained abroad. The admission tests include:

  • a multiple choice test including general knowledge questions and specific questions regarding the area of study of the chosen School
  • a still-life drawing test
  • a free choice artwork test- which calls for the creation of one or more works using techniques chosen by the candidate
  • aptitude test

Future Employment prospects

Graduates in the three-year course in Decoration will go on to become freelance professionals in a range of areas, from creating visual works of art as well as planning and designing larger local interventions. Having acquired the traditional and multimedia artistic techniques opens up a range of opportunities of collaborations in different areas, in both the public and private sector, where consolidated design skills as well as operational skills are required.

First Level Graphic Art course

The course offers a wide educational selection of courses  focusing on the different styles and technical innovations which characterize the modern art world, the aim is to create and shape professional figures who are able to carry out their own study both in the field of traditional graphics and in the development and experimentation of multi media and contemporary graphics. The students will develop their research focus in different areas: from the creation of works created using traditional procedures, to the experimentation of new materials and innovative methodologies, including photography, video, digital and multimedia technologies, including three-dimensionality and installation.

Second level Graphic  graduates will have the necessary skills to carry out a number of different roles in different areas: as a professional artist, in the field of visual arts, in creative activities and in teaching in areas of publishing, animated videos, illustration and designing visual graphics. Graduate students will specialize in the design and development of graphic matrices with traditional tools as well as with new technologies.

  • a multiple choice test including general knowledge questions and specific questions regarding the area of study of the School;
  • a still-life drawing test, the use of real-life models , or any other object, is subject to the Board
  • a free choice artwork test using one or more graphic art techniques as chosen by the candidate.
  • The tests will take place over consecutive days and will conclude with an aptitude test.

The graduates will perform different professional roles in a number of different areas, from the professional artist, in the field of visual arts and creative activities, as well as collaborating in the planning, design and implementation of specific sculpture works- as well as in the architecture and urban planning sectors.

Thanks to G Suite Enterprise for Education the Accademia di Brera provides a set of advanced tools for teaching and learning purposes such as live streaming Hangouts Meet which allows for “extended group lessons” for up to a maximum of 250 participants, with the lesson saved on Google Drive.

All the G Suite tools provided by the Accademia are perfectly compatible with smartphones, tablets and smartwatches. The students can use their own personal devices to follow lessons and /or benefit from the handouts and lecture notes.
