FAQ Scholarships
WOULD YOU LIKE TO ATTEND THE ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI BRERA BUT ARE IN NEED OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT?
Thanks to regional funding, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, administers approximately 300 grants and scholarships a year through the yearly Announcement in order to obtain a Regional Grant.
The Grants and Scholarships are divided between first year students and students attending subsequent year courses, the amount is differentiated based on student status.
It is not simply a means of financial support but involves a number of services, including a free canteen service and university accommodation.
GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS: ACCESS TO FUNDS AND REQUIREMENTS
The requirements refer to the student’s merit and income and both requirements must be complied to at the time of the Announcement’s deadline.
In particular:
STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT: in order to apply for grants and scholarships it is necessary to have the document ISEE/2020 for the Right to University Education for those students with an Italian based income and the document ISEEU for those students with a foreign based income (or generated in Italy and abroad) which certifies the income of the family household. These documents are to be prepared by CAF (Government Office for Tax Assistance) and the data is subsequently added to the online application.
Any student who is repeating the academic year (with reference to any year of enrollment), or who has not completed the exams within the set time period, or who has suspended their studies for more than two consecutive years or for up to two non-consecutive years, is not eligible for any grant or scholarship if these conditions concern the same level of studies of grant application. If, however, the student attends a two-year specialization course, and any non- conformity refers to the student’s three year degree course the student can take the necessary steps to apply for a grant or scholarship ( Students are advised to read the Announcement in full for those Exceptional Cases regarding the Five Year Restoration Course).
WHEN CAN I SUBMIT AN APPLICATION FOR A GRANT OR SCHOLARSHIP?
The Announcement is published every year in July (September 2020 is the scheduled publication date for the academic year 2020-2021) on the Accademia’s website on the Home Page under the term Grants and Scholarships (one of the Smart Links, to be found at the bottom left). At the same time the link to fill in the relevant online application will also be available. The deadline is scheduled for October.
Students can fill in the online application even before the results of the tests and enrollment in the Accademia
WHAT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED?
The complete list of the necessary documents to be submitted and the deadlines to be complied to is set out in the Announcement and is divided into the two categories: students with an Italian based income and students with an income generated abroad.
As from the academic year 2020-2021 only those students with an income generated abroad will be required to submit paper documentation. All other students should upload the documentation directly from the scholarships and grants portal.
Students should consult the section SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS 2020-2021 in order to get an idea of the general documentation required and the necessary merit and income requirements.
WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?
Once the enrollment procedure has been concluded and the necessary documents have been submitted, students are required to wait for the publication of the rankings, as follows:
Provisional Ranking (November): indicates if the student meets the minimum requirements in order to apply. In this phase students can appeal against any errors or make any necessary amendments.
Provisional Ranking Update (November): updates the data relating to the previous ranking, regarding any errors or reservations;
Definitive Ranking (December): indicates whether the student has Awardee status or is deemed Eligible (that is to say the student meets the requirements as set out in the Announcement, but regional funds are insufficient)
First Update of the Definitive Ranking (May) indicates the change from Conditional Commuter to Non-Residing Student for those students who have submitted the rental contract in compliance to the dates set out in the Announcement or those who have accepted the available accommodation and as Commuters the students who have not submitted a rental contract or have not accepted the available accommodation; it regulates the situation of “conditional” students in the first year of a two Year Course (see Announcement for full details); it excludes those students who have withdrawn by the 30th of April.
Second Update of the Definitive Ranking (September): indicates the outstanding amount for those students previously deemed Awardees and having checked the availability of additional regional funds at the end of the summer period, appoints and assigns the amount for the new Awardees of the following years; assigns the status of Awardees to those first year students with merit achieved by the 10th of August, until the additional regional funds have been used (the funds cover approximately 85% of the annual ranking) and suspends those students who have not achieved the merit; and excludes those students who have withdrawn by the 30th of August.
Third and final Update of the Definitive Ranking (published in the month of December following the request): indicates those first year students who have been re-instated in the ranking, having achieved the necessary merit by the 30th of November (who will be ranked behind those students who achieved the necessary merit by the 10th of August) assigning the reimbursement of the regional tax (140 euro) and the first year students who have lost their place in the ranking for not having obtained the necessary merit by the 30th of November, will have to return all the amounts used during the year for having been scholarship holders (the amount of meals consumed up until July and the annual amount for accommodation.
WHAT DOES BEING DEEMED AN AWARDEE IN THE DEFINITIVE RANKING ENTAIL?
A student deemed an Awardee obtains the financial support and the services- canteen facilities and accommodation- as from January 2021.
WHAT DOES BEING DEEMED ELIGIBLE IN THE DEFINITIVE RANKING ENTAIL?
A student deemed Eligible obtains only the services. The number of scholarships will be more substantial in the September 2021 update based on the economic allocations made available by the Regione Lombardia in August 2021. For this reason available funds will be assigned to those students who had been previously ranked as eligible, who will now become Awardees. Students who are still deemed eligible in the September 2021 update will no longer be able to obtain any amount.
WHAT DOES BEING DEEMED NON ELIGIBLE IN THE DEFINITIVE RANKING ENTAIL?
A student deemed Non-Eligible does not have one or more of the requirements indicated and is therefore excluded from any benefit.
Students deemed Awardees and those deemed Eligible are exempt from the payment of the all-inclusive financial contribution (the tax calculated on the basis of the ISEE 2020 certificate), but must pay the Regional tax for University Education and stamp duty ( 240 euro for the first and 16 euro for the second in a single Pre-Printed Pay Slip for a total of 156 euro together with the postal money order of the Government Tax (first year students, or those attending the Accademia for the first time, following, for example, a transfer, must pay a Government Tax of 102.93; students attending subsequent year courses must pay 72.67). Students deemed Non-Eligible are not exempt from payment (unless they fall into those excluded categories, as indicated in the Taxes and Contributions terms and conditions, available on the Accademia ‘s web site).
I AM A FIRST YEAR STUDENT. IS IT POSSIBILE TO BE DEEMED AN AWARDEE IN THE DEFINITIVE DECEMBER 2020 RANKING?
NO, because first year students enrolled in three year degree courses, the five year restoration course or two year specialization courses will be placed in alphabetical order in the December 2020 definitive ranking, and in this ranking may be deemed Eligible or Non-Eligible but never deemed an Awardee, as the subsidy to first year students can only be paid to those who have obtained the necessary 35 credits and an average 27 by the 10th of August 2021. Furthermore, it is necessary that the Regione Lombardia provides additional funding by the end of the summer 2021 in order to increase the number of scholarship opportunities at the beginning of the academic year (therefore the exact number of first year student scholarships remains unknown until the Regione Lombardia indicates the amount of additional funds at the end of the summer 2021. The assignment of funds is not automatic for those first year students who achieve the afore-mentioned merit. The availability of immediate funds is also a factor). The second update of the definitive ranking, in September 2021, will indicate those first year students deemed Awardees. In this case the ranking will no longer be in alphabetical order, but based on the merit achieved during the first year of study, up to the 10th of August 2021 (therefore, the minimum in order to be part of the ranking until 31st of December 2021, is to achieve the necessary 35 credits and an average of 27).
I AM NOT A FIRST YEAR STUDENT. CAN I BE DEEMED AN AWARDEE IN THE DECEMBER 2020 DEFINITIVE RANKING. WHAT EXACTLY IS PROVIDED AND WHAT IS THE TIME SCALE?
Yes. Students enrolled in course study years subsequent to the first year deemed Awardees in the December 2020 ranking will receive the scholarship subsidy in two installments: in March and in October 2021 according to residence status and income category (see the Announcement’s charts for further information).
I AM DEEMED AN AWARDEE AS OF THE SECOND UPDATE OF THE SEPTEMBER 2021 DEFINITIVE RANKING. I WAS PREVIOUSLY DEEMED ELIGIBLE. WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT ENTAIL?
All students who were deemed eligible as of the first update of the definitive ranking (in May), have the opportunity to be deemed Awardees in the second update in September, until the additional regional funds, sent at the end of August 2021, have been used and only if the student meets the necessary terms and conditions as set out in the Announcement dated the 30th of August (regarding first year students: to have achieved the necessary merit by the 10th of August, for all other years including the first, not to have withdrawn from their studies before the 30th of August). The scholarship will be paid in full by October to those deemed Awardees in the second update in September.
I AM DEEMED ELIGIBLE IN THE DEFINITIVE RANKING. WHAT EXACTLY IS PROVIDED AND WHAT IS THE TIME SCALE?
All students, enrolled in all course years, who are deemed Eligible will be able to benefit from a free daily meal and accommodation (if they have been awarded the latter service) in the same ways and means as those students deemed Awardees.
The students deemed Eligible may be deemed Awardees with the second update to the definitive ranking in September 2021 and therefore receive a scholarship, thanks to additional regional funds. Those students who continue to be deemed eligible in the second update in September, will only receive the reimbursement of the University Education Tax of 140 euro and will continue to benefit from canteen services and accommodation facilities (if the latter has already been assigned) until December 2021.
I AM A FIRST YEAR STUDENT AND I AM SURE THAT I WILL BE UNABLE TO ACHIEVE THE 35 CREDITS AND THE AVERAGE MARK OF 27, AS SET OUT IN THE PROPOSAL, BY THE 10TH OF AUGUST. WHAT WILL THE CONSEQUENCES BE?
First year students of any level, who will not achieve the minimum number of credits will have their canteen badge blocked, and therefore will not be able to benefit from free meals from September to December 2021. If the student in question was deemed an Awardee, payment of the scholarship will be suspended. If by November 2020 the credits are obtained, then half of the total amount will be paid. If the credits are not obtained by November 2020 the student will have to render the amount spent in services (canteen and accomodation), as indicated in the letter forwarded by the Office for University Education “Restitutionof Scholarship funds”. The student will also be required to make a prompt payment of the All-Inclusive Financial Contribution, an amount which varies according to the student’s own ISEE and which will be calculated by the Tax and Contributions Office.

Payment will not be made before July following the last possible graduation session. It is necessary to wait 30 days from the date of the last graduation session of the academic year under evaluation, i.e the extraordinary February-April session of the last year of a Two year or Five year course (in the healthcare emergency period, the extraordinary session 2018-2019 will end in June 2020).

Supplementary Grants for Erasmus+ Students and Traineeship (only for scholarship holders)
The supplementary grant to the Erasmus+ Students and Erasmus+ Traineeship programme can be awarded upon request only to those students deemed Eligible or Awardees for Scholarships in the same academic year in which they participate in the Erasmus+ programme. The student must select the relevant item on the online Scholarship application form.
Example: a student who has applied for and considered eligible to leave for the Erasmus+ programme in the academic year 2019-2020 (starting in September 2019 and concluding in July 2020) must apply for the supplementary grant with the scholarship application for the academic year 2019-2020 (applications from July 2019 to October 2019) in the specific online section. If, in the definitive scholarship ranking published in December 2019 a student was deemed Eligible or an Awardee, then they are deemed Eligible also for the supplementary grant for the Erasmus+ Students and Traineeship programme. Being deemed Eligible does not in any way guarantee the awarding of the supplementary grant, as there are a set number of grants which vary from year to year and, if the demand exceeds the supply, the necessary steps will be taken to draw up a ranking.
The amount the awarded student will receive for each month spent abroad and subsequently confirmed by the Erasmus Office, for up to a maximum of ten months, varies from destination to destination.
The supplementary grant will be paid in a lump sum payment, in the December of the year following the request, after having calculated the exact amount of time spent abroad.
Students are also entitled to a reimbursement of return travel expenses, an amount equal to € 150 for EU countries and € 500 for non-European countries (students are not required to submit a copy of travel tickets to obtain this amount).
The minimum stay required in order to receive the supplementary grant is 3 months for Students mobility and 2 months for Traineeship.
Supplementary grants for participation in international mobility programmes are awarded to beneficiaries only once for every study plan throughout first and second level courses.
Details on the Erasmus+ Traineeship Supplementary Grant
The supplementary grant can only be granted to those scholarship holders in the last year of a Three-year, Five-year or Two-year course and who have not graduated for that level of study (only Art 2 students can apply for the supplementary grant even if they are enrolled in the first year out of the course prescribed time, ie the fourth year of a Three-year course, the third year of a Two-year course, the sixth year of a Five-year course, as long as they have not yet graduated for that level). The request must be made in the specific section of the online application for Scholarships, in the same academic year of participation. There is however an exception to this rule. The supplementary grant can also be granted to those students who participate in the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme during their last academic year of their level of study. They are deemed Eligible or Awardees of Scholarships and can therefore begin from September of the academic year following the publication of the definitive ranking of that same year.
In this case (and only in this case) the application must be submitted in a print version (using the model at the bottom of the page) to the Office for the Right to University Education, following acknowledgement from the Erasmus Office and by the date set out in the Announcement for Scholarships for the current year.
The supplementary grant will be granted for a period no longer than 5 months, taking into account the actual stay from September to March. Payment in this case will be made in April, two years after the publication of the definitive Scholarship ranking.
The student in question, is neither required to enroll in the year outside of the prescribed course time, nor to have to prove to be enrolled in the first year of the two year course until the end of the Erasmus+ Traineeship Programme.
Example: A student enrolls in the third year of a Three-year degree course in the academic year 2019-2020 and submits an application for a Scholarship for this current academic year by October 2019.The student is deemed eligible in the December ranking and shortly afterwards submits an application to participate in the Erasmus+ Programme, starting in September 2020 (the following academic year) and is accepted. The student can participate from September 2020 to July 2021. If the student does not intend to enroll in the fourth year of a Three-year course or in the first year of a Two-year course, he or she can take the necessary steps to send a printed version of the request for the supplementary grant to the Scholarship for participating in the Erasmus+ Programme to the Office for the Right to University (the application is to be found attached at the bottom of the page) by the date set out in the Announcement (currently the 29th of July 2020). The Office takes the necessary steps to check the conformity of the request and grants the supplementary amount to the student in April 2021, taking into consideration that the student is neither enrolled in the fourth year, nor proves to be still a graduate (or perhaps has recently graduated) and that the applications submitted for grants fall within the range of the Announcement. The payment will cover a maximum of 5 monthly payments plus a one-off payment for round trip travel expenses subject to confirmation by the Erasmus Office.
Canteen reimbursement and temporary non-residing student status for scholarship students and Erasmus+ Programme participants
Those students deemed Eligible or Awardees for Scholarships who intend to participate in the Erasmus+ programme in the same academic year can apply to obtain a canteen reimbursement and the assignment of temporary non-residing student status (the latter can only be requested by those students who meet the requirements to be deemed a non-residing student, as set out in the Announcement). The requests should be printed and the deadline is after the closure of scholarship applications.
Students who submit a request for an Erasmus+ Traineeship during the year (the last case mentioned above), may submit the request for the canteen reimbursement at the same time as the supplementary grant, therefore according to the latter’s deadline, but will receive the reimbursement only for the service until December 31st of the calendar year of the request, which concerns the last academic year in progress, even if their course will continue over the following months.
It is not possible for this category of students to request temporary non-residing student status at the same time as this condition must be met by September, indicatively the first month of the Erasmus+ period.
The forms can be found at the bottom of the page.
Consult the Announcement of the current Academic Year for further details.
N.B. The printed form for the application for the assignment and supplementary grant is reserved only for those students who will leave in SEPTEMBER 2020 and in the academic year 2019/2020 attended the last year of a Three year course- without any further enrollment in a Second year course or enrollment in a fourth year of a Three year course for the academic year 2020/2021- of a Five year course (without enrollment in a 6th year for the academic year 2020-2021) or of a two year course (without enrollment to a third year for the academic year 2020-2021) thus proving to be Eligible or a Scholarship Awardee.

University Accommodation and Canteen
Services reserved only for scholarship holders
The canteen service is reserved for those Eligible students or the Awardees of regional scholarships, , who are entitled to a free daily meal from January to December (excluding August).
There is no specific application form for this service. Those students deemed eligible or those awarded with scholarships automatically obtain the service. In order to take advantage of the canteen service, the Eligible student or the Scholarship Awardee must have the right badge, which, for first time users and first year students can be collected from the Right to University Education office during public opening times , after the publication of the definitive ranking in December and after having received communication by e-mail from the Student support office.
Students must present themselves at the Office with a valid, current EU identity document (Identity Card, Passport, driving licence) and their student’s record book.
The badge can be used in any of the affiliated canteen points as listed in the PDF at the bottom of the page.
The canteen badge is re-issued free of charge only to those students who detect its malfunction (the old badge must be handed back into the office). In the event that a student loses the badge or the badge is stolen, he or she is required to pay 5 Euro to the bank account indicated in the document at the bottom of the page in order to obtain a new one (the document also includes details on badge consignment).
Reimbursement of the canteen service , be it annual or partial, is allowed only in the case of food intolerances/allergies ,which must be verified by specialists, participation in the Erasmus programme or in the absence of affiliated canteen service points in proximity to the study location (Restoration students who attend the courses in Arcore). The request must be submitted by the 31st of January for the current academic year (students can find the form at the bottom of the page).
For more information on guidelines and regulations students can consult the announcement of the current Academic Year
The accommodation service and/or the Non-Residing student status can be attributed to two types of students: those who have their family of origin residing abroad (family of origin residing abroad with a foreign sourced income) and those (Italian or foreign students) who have their family of origin in Italy, with an Italian/foreign sourced income, but do not reside in one of the municipalities indicated as a Commuting Student in the attached PDF document at the bottom of the page.
The attribution of Non-Residing student status is automatic only for the first type of students described above (family of origin residing abroad with a foreign sourced income). The second type (family of origin residing in Italy with an Italian sourced income), in order to be assured the Non-Residing student status, students can opt for one of the following actions: submit a rent contract as indicated in the Announcement or apply for accommodation and be awarded it (therefore it is not simply by applying for accommodation that Non-Residing student status is obtained, a student must also be awarded accommodation. Those students deemed Eligible for the service in the definitive December Accommodation ranking, in order to obtain the Non-Residing student status must submit a rent contract within the deadlines set out in the Announcement. Failure to do so will result in the student keeping Commuting student status).
In other words if the student manages to obtain the monetary amount to supplement funds, he or she will receive it as a Commuting student and not as a Non-residing one. In order to request the Accommodation service, those afore-mentioned categories of students must make a specific request in the section dedicated to online scholarship applications, according to the criteria and deadlines set out in the Announcement. It is not possible to obtain the service if a student is deemed Not Eligible in the definitive December ranking, but it is possible to be awarded accommodation even if a student is deemed eligible only in the scholarship ranking (for further details consult the Announcement).
A student holding a rent contract is not entitled to also submit a request for university accommodation. Therefore any student who requests the accommodation service and subsequently submits a rent contract before the publication of a ranking (provisional or definitive) will be deemed Not Eligible in the ranking for incompatibility reasons (awarded accommodation service and Non-residing student status), but will be able to obtain Non- Residing Student status in the Scholarship ranking if the rent contract meets the criteria set out in the Announcement. In this case, if the student is deemed Eligible in the scholarship ranking, the awarding of Non-Residing student status will not entitle the student to obtain any contribution for private accommodation. If, however, the student is an Awardee in the same ranking then he or she will receive an annual amount specifically for this category of student (Non-residing with private accommodation) which can be consulted in the Announcement.
For those students Awarded with university accommodation the Accademia di Belle Arti has:
Number of sleeping places: 42 Type of room: Double with en-suite bathroom facilities (20, equivalent to 40 sleeping places) and single with en-suite bathroom facilities (2- only upon request for students with health issues); students: male and female (mixed rooms possible upon request); common areas: kitchen, study rooms, laundromat, self service bar, gym, hobby area, park. Services included in accommodation: wi-fi, weekly change of bed linen, concierge services, utilities. Closed in August.
Students who were awarded with accommodation in the previous academic year (with reference to the current one) do not have any precedence.
Only those students deemed AWARDEES in the Accommodation ranking will be awarded the service. If they are deemed ELIGIBLE they have not been awarded the service and they are neither entitled to a refund or a grant to find private accommodation. The awardees are not obliged to accept the accommodation and to waiver their right to the award they should use the attached PDF form at the bottom of the page (within 5 days of the publication of the definitive ranking. If they fail do so they forfeit their right to accommodation). These students will neither be given Non-Residing student status, unless they submit a rent contract, nor will they receive grants or reimbursements for any accommodation found privately. If, on the other hand, they want to accept the award, they must submit the request in PDF available at the bottom of the page, within 5 working day a of the publication of the definitive ranking (in this way they will be given Non-Residing student status which will be visible in the first update in May). If they want to waiver their right to the service after initially accepting it (whether they have actually used the service or not) they must submit the relative form, in PDF, found at the bottom of the page Students are required to comply to the regulations as set set out in the Announcement for this specific case.
Moreover, it may be possible for a student to obtain accommodation during the year, due to the waiver of the awardee. In this case it is also possible to accept the accommodation within the time frame indicated by the Office in the communication which will be sent by email and by phone. Students must submit the form which is accessible in pdf at the bottom of the page during the publication periods.
STUDENTS ARE REMINDED THAT BETWEEN THE PROVISIONAL RANKINGS AND THE DEFINITIVE ONE THERE MAY BE SUBSTANTIAL CHANGES DEPENDING ON THE APPEALS SUBMITTED.
For further information regarding the regulations relating to the service and the formation of the ranking (which is separate from the Scholarship ranking, even if a student deemed not eligible in the scholarship ranking can not be deemed Eligible or an Awardee in the Accommodation ranking) students can consult the Announcement of the current Academic Year.
